Taken from the forthcoming EP "Rocket Johnny"

One day a couple of years ago I found myself intrigued by the title of the song “Johnny on the Monorail” from the classic synthpop album by the Buggles, “The Age of Plastic.” That got me thinking of other names and phrases for a potential song title using the name Johnny. For some reason I thought of the burger joint Johnny Rocket’s and then my brain flipped the words around. I immediately felt it would make an intriguing song title. The next instant, as sometimes happens, out of the blue the first two lines of this song just popped into my head. It meant nothing at first, but I loved how it sounded and within an hour I had the whole story worked out. On the surface, it’s about a washed up astronaut turned bar band guitar player, but at a more fundamental level it’s really a requiem for the hopes and dreams of Generation X.

Verse 1

See that Rocket Johnny; got his Big Boys on
Been dreaming ‘bout the stars since ‘71
Cruising down the highway with the Cape in sight
His motorcycle running underneath the Milky Way tonight

A different kind of Saturn used to grace the sky
A machine only someone like Johnny could fly
But his dreams turn to dust in the light of day
It’s only a mirage standing out there on 39A

Tell me, where do we go from here
When the dreams we had all disappear?
Tell me, where do we go from here
When the end of the world is near?

Verse 2

He pulled into the parking lot and killed the lights
At the same place he played every Saturday night
He grabbed his guitar and he headed inside
Where he traded in the dream of taking a rocket ride

As he got upon the stage all across the floor
They called out “Rocket Johnny, c’mon rock it some more!”
He played Led Zeppelin and he played The Cars
But all he really wanted was to rocket out into the stars

Repeat chorus

Verse 3

Back out on the highway heading ‘round the bend
It was there that Rocket Johnny finally met the end
They say that if you look up when the moon is right
You will see him in his rocket
Johnny’s flying with the stars tonight…

Repeat chorus x2
